Omaha is a large state in area with a population of 1.7 million people. Its largest city is Omaha, on the border with Iowa, with a population of over 400,000. To show its business friendly, low tax atmosphere, Gov. Dave Heineman just signed LB 367. The package is the largest tax relief bill in Nebraska history and is expected to provide $425 million in tax relief over the next two years. The bill includes reductions in Nebraska’s income, sales and property taxes. One significant component of the package is the elimination of the marriage penalty in Nebraska’s policy on income tax. The bill also reduces property taxes across the state, with $105 million applied in FY 2008 and $115 million in FY 2009. LB 367 also repeals several taxes, including the estate tax and the sales tax on construction labor. The repeal of the estate tax will help small business owners and family farmers pass on their property to the next generation. The repeal of the estate tax will be applied retroactive to Jan. 1, 2007, and provide more than $37 million in tax relief over the next two years.

Cargill Sweeteners North America is one of the world’s leading producers of corn sweeteners, processing more than 200,000 bushels of corn daily. Its high fructose corn syrup is used in soft drinks and other food and beverage applications. Other manufactured corn syrups, dextrose syrups and sucrose are used in confectionery, brewing, food and pharmaceutical applications. The company plans to open a 200 million gallon-per-year ethanol facility in Wood River, Neb., by 2008, for use in the nationally expanded effort of blending ethanol with gasoline.
In the central park of the state there is the tourist attraction of the Cowboy Trail, which is still partially under construction. Rabbits, pheasants, squirrels and songbirds can be seen throughout the Sandhill Region along this road. This 321 mile trail can be traveled by hiking, biking, or by horseback riding.
