London: A Capital attraction for Mothers Day

Mother's Day is the perfect time to say 'thank you' to mums everywhere for all their care and hard work. But instead of giving flowers and chocolates this year, why not consider whisking your mum off to London to sample the attractions and activities of the nation's capital?

In 2008, Mothers Day falls on March 2nd, and according to the city's official visitor organisation, Visit London, there is plenty for mums to get excited about with a vast array of attractions and events on offer across the capital. One such event is the Florimania exhibition, to be held at Hampton Court Palace. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, Florimania will run from 29 February to 3 March and will play host to a fragrant array of flower displays inspired by different eras and cultures from around the world, adorning Queen Mary's spectacular apartments in the palace. The rest of the palace grounds will also be open - including the famous Maze.

For those mums who love to shop, the trendy Marylebone district is an ideal suggestion for a day of retail therapy. In between shopping, however, take a break to enjoy a "Fashion Tea for Two" at the Mandeville Hotel - an ideal place to replenish your energy reserves. With a selection of cakes and table settings inspired by fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, shoppers can indulge in Zandra's 'Pink Meringues', 'Queen of Hearts Tarts' or even a 'Champagne Tea' before hitting the shops again at somewhere like the opulent Burlington Arcade in the West End. This hidden treasure is the oldest shopping arcade in Britain and offers a variety of fine goods such as cashmere, chocolates, antiques and exclusive fragrances. With its elegantly decorated walkway, it is also the perfect place for a Mothers Day in London outing, and the Arcade is even offering an exclusive privilege card giving discounts of up to 20% off on the day!

For culture-vulture mums, or those who prefer something a little out of the norm, the Hackney Empire is staging an evening of Edwardian variety theatre for Mother's Day. The entertainment is hosted by Jim McManus and stars comedian Brian Burdon, Pearly Queen Lola McDowell and songstress Carolyn Allen. The evening promises to be a fantastic, family-friendly way to celebrate Mother's Day.

Another of the events which Visit London feels will be a big hit this year is being offered by The Bingham, who are providing a magical Mother's Day for those with young children. The hotel is hosting a 'Harry Potter' party to keep the kids busy with a variety of educational games inspired by Potter's magic world. The Bingham is also serving a special Little One's Menu to accompany a three-course Mothering Sunday Lunch Menu.

The range of attractions, activities and events doesn't stop here, however, and mums are sure to find an attraction or event going on in London which will guarantee their special day be a day of relaxation and enjoyment.
