What to wear on an Adventure Holiday
Here is a quick guide on what to wear if you are off on
adventure holidays.
Expeditions
Clothing
The most important thing for expeditions clothing wise is keeping the bulk and weight down. Ideally two sets of trousers and long sleeved shirts, one for the day and one for the night time. Both sets should be baggy to avoid chaffing and easy to roll up. Zip off trousers can be handy to take with you on
walking holidays. You will also need to take something warm like a fleece or body warmer even if you are going on tropical
activity holidays. To protect your head, a bandana or scarf is essential.
Waterproofs
To protect yourself from rain we advise you take a poncho, because they cover your body and your rucksack and belongings attached to your body. The design of eliminates the need of waterproof trousers and it can also be used as a ground sheet, protective cover or for shelter.
Footwear
Correct and comfortable footwear is essential; we recommend a pair of sturdy protective boots and some sandals.
Overland
Clothing
The clothing you take on overland
activity holidays needs to cater for many situations and climates. We suggest when travelling in colder climates that you go for layering and use protective fabrics to deal with the sun, thorns, insects and the elements. A hat, ideally full brimmed is recommended to provide protection for face, head and neck.
Waterproofs
Again a poncho is ideal as it is very versatile. But a lightweight breathable jacket is also a good idea as it offers a windproof out layer. Team this up with waterproof trousers is you know you will be visiting wet or cold climates.
Footwear
Waterproof shoes can be uncomfortable if you are spending long amount of time in the heat. So we recommend some breathable non waterproof boots combined with waterproof breathable socks for the most comfortable combination. A pair of sandals will also be useful on overland
walking holidays.
City
Clothing
When travelling in Cities, lightweight clothing should be worn in layers to deal with varying temperatures of stuffy buildings and outside elements. We recommend a scarf or bandana to be taken to religious sites to cover up your head and shoulders. IN Countries where it is compulsory for women to cover up, consider utilising a long sleeved shirt and sarong.
Waterproofs
We recommend a lightweight breathable jacket for protection in a city.
Footwear
When walking around lots on concrete, you can get tired, sore and hot feet so we recommend you wear breathable footwear with shock absorbency. Shock absorbing insoles can be added to your shoes for extra comfort.
Jungle
When on Jungle
Adventure holidays, cotton clothing helps keep you cool by staying damp and prevents dehydration. Light polycottons and polyamides are easier to dry out if they become damp, so ideally you should take one of each outfit. Again a poncho is a good item to take as it is a great waterproof but allows good air circulation. When considering what footwear to take, you need to think about the wildlife, sandals are not ideal as snakes, leeches and scorpions can all cause problems. So the best solution is breathable fast drying boots such as army jungle boots.
Desert
When on Desert
Activity holidays, sun protective clothing is very important. Nomadic tribes in the desert wear dark heavy clothing which keeps you cool by preventing sweat from evaporating quickly. A full brimmed hat and bandana are ideal for protecting your head, neck and face. On the footwear side breathable boots are a good idea; sandals are not a good idea as the sun will blisters your exposed skin.
Trekking
When on trekking and
walking holidays , thin layers are ideal as they provide great adaptability in the varying weather conditions. It is essential that you keep your clothing as dry as possible to avoid chills, so take waterproof jackets and trousers. Polycotton or polyamide clothing is the fastest drying. A hat, gloves and scarf/bandana are a must. Use wool based socks and waterproof walking boots. 'Walking' sandals are also worth packing and Compeed blister patches are a must in your medical kit.
